Working as an OR analyst

OR analysts tackle a vast range of political, economic and social issues across more than 25 government departments and agencies. Customers exist at all levels throughout Government; from team managers, through policy makers to Ministers and Secretaries of State.

Eligibility

To apply, you will need (or be working towards) a first class or 2:1 degree in a numerate subject or have a 2:2 degree with significant relevant work experience. Applicants will typically be studying Operational Research, Mathematics, Physics or Management Sciences, though candidates will come from a variety of backgrounds.

GORS follows Cabinet Office guidance on Nationality and Immigration requirements. Please ensure you meet the criteria before applying.

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary range for graduates passing the board at GORS Level 1 is detailed below.
  • National: £21,220 - £28,636
  • London: £24,470 - £31,900

Applicants with significant work experience who pass the board at GORS level 2 / level 3 can expect a starting salary range as follows

  • National: £24,660 - £38,200
  • London: £28,250 - £41,272

You will receive around 22-30 days’ holiday per year in addition to public and privilege holidays, and have access to a competitive pension scheme. Many departments across the civil service also offer flexible working hours and job share opportunities.

Please note that pay and conditions vary across departments and the ranges above should be used as a guide.

Recruitment Process

You will attend an assessment day where you will be required to sit a Problem Structuring Test (PST). This will give you a chance to demonstrate your analytical ability in structuring suggested solutions to a typical OR problem. You will then have a chance to speak with an OR analyst on their experience of working within Government before sitting an interview board.

You will be assessed at interview based on the GORS Operational Research competencies.
